Drew Lamb and Gavin Lessley combined to strike out eight and scatter seven hits as Pillow Academy picked up a 3-2 District 1-AAAA win over Washington School Tuesday night in Greenville.
The Mustangs scored their first two runs in the third inning and tacked on one in the fourth. The Generals scored their two runs in the sixth frame.
Lamb (4-2) got the win as he went 41/3 innings, allowing only one hit while walking six and fanning six. Lessley got the save as he went 22/3 innings, giving up both runs on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Matthew and Michael Jefcoat led the way for Pillow at the plate. Matthew Jefcoat had a single and double and drove in one run, and Michael Jefcoat had two singles and scored a pair of runs. Lessley had a single, and Lawes McCool scored a run. J.C. Garrard and Nolan Marshall had an RBI each.
Pillow (11-14 overall, 3-4 in conference) plays host to Washington for a pair of games Thursday starting at 4 p.m.
- J.Z. George: The Jaguars’ defense fell apart in a doubleheader loss at Bruce High School Tuesday.
J.Z. George committed 18 errors in the two games as the Trojans won the first game 12-7 and took the second contest 16-3.
Bruce jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning in Game 1 and led 10-0 by the end of the third frame. J.Z. George clawed its way back with a single run in the fourth and six in the top of the sixth. The Trojans tacked on two runs in the home half of the sixth.
Michael Bankston went all six innings for the Jags as he allowed the 12 runs on four hits, walking four and fanning two. He didn’t get much help from the defense as it made seven errors.
Brandon McKenzie and Lake Shute had a double, run scored and RBI each for J.Z. George.
Alan Busby drove in two runs, scored a run and had a single, and Keiyhaun Wilks had a double.
Nathan Carpenter, Bankston and Wil’Tavious Williams had a single and scored a run apiece, and Thurman Koch had a single.
In the second game, Bruce was serving as the visiting team and scored three runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and seven in the fifth. The Jags scored one in the first and two in the third.
Williams started on the mound, going four-plus innings. He allowed 13 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits, walking six and fanning one. Wilks worked one inning, giving up three runs on three hits.
Jacob Johnson had a single, double, RBI and scored a run. Busby and Richard Dempsey had a single each.
J.Z. George entertains McAdams Tuesday.
- Leflore County: The Tigers played their first game of the 2021 season as they dropped a 19-0 decision to McEvans High School Tuesday at Shaw.
McEvans scored nine runs in the first, six in the second and four in the third.
Dezmond Dodd had a double for Leflore.
The Tigers are slated to play a doubleheader at Simmons High School Friday starting at 3 p.m.
